I found out that there was a Homesense store opening up in Westlake, Ohio and my first thought was a question – is Homesense the same as HomeGoods? I learned that Homesense is not the same as HomeGoods. Although both brands are in the TJ Maxx family, Homesense carries more larger furniture items than its sister store HomeGoods. There’s some overlap between what the two stores carry but they are designed to complementary.
While there’s HomeGoods stores all over the country, Homesense is just making it’s way west. The Westlake, Ohio HomeSense store marks the first location outside of the east coast and the 18th location in the US. To add to the confusion, in Canada, there’s no HomeGoods and their HomeGoods-type store is called Homesense. But in the US, Homesense and HomeGoods are distinctly different stores. I got to see the differences first-hand at a preview of the new Westlake Homesense.
The Difference Between HomeGoods and Homesense
Luxurious sectionals and large mural-style paintings greeted me as I walked into the Westlake Homesense store. The big ticket furniture items felt like a distinct departure from the more decor focus of HomeGoods. Upon closer examination, there are more differences.
Homesense divides everything into sections. In the Rug Emporium, you can find a wide variety of floor coverings. The Celebrate section includes wrapping paper, cards and gift ideas curated by occasion. There’s a kitchen section at Homesense but there’s no food like you would find at HomeGoods.
The General Store features hardware items such as metallic paint and crystal knobs. Think of Homesense at your first stop for a DIY project and HomeGoods as your second stop for accent items (although you can find some of those at Homesense too)! There’s also a and you can bet I was eyeing a few pieces there for the home office I desperately need to build.
At HomeGoods you can find table lamps and a few floor lamps but at Homesense, there’s an entire lighting moment. Everything from industrial lighting fixtures to modern chandeliers hangs from the ceiling at Homesense. There’s a wall featuring floor to ceiling lamps. This lighting display, along with the pillow wall, definitely felt like art.
You won’t find any children’s, pet or wellness items at Homesense like you would at HomeGoods. And while you can buy a full bedroom set at Homesense, you’ll need to head to HomeGoods to grab your bedding. You can grab a dining room table and find all of the matching chairs you need to complete the room right at Homesense. No more one-off accent chairs. PLUS, Homesense offers delivery which is a must on some of the bigger ticket items.
Curation runs throughout the entire Homesense store. Everything feels like it was placed very thoughtfully in its place. The curation makes it easy to visualize how you could style certain pieces in your own home. From Millennium pink swivel office chairs to agate side tables, Homesense has a clear modern vibe. Current design trends such as faux ship lap, reclaimed wood, and copper accents fill the aisles.
As an engaged babe hoping to save for my first house soon, Homesense gave me a ton of inspiration. I’ve shopped for a couch before and a lot of furniture stores feel devoid of curation and are more focused on function. Homesense felt like the perfect hybrid. They carry furniture but they also carry accent items you can actually purchase.
Speaking of purchasing, the prices are really reasonable. There’s sectionals for under $1000. Office chairs for under $100. Homeware items starting at $3.99. Much like HomeGoods, items are subject to change quickly and by season. If you see something you like, snag it!
For now, the Westlake location is the only Homesense in the midwest. After you find new furniture pieces at Homesense, you can head just a few miles down to the road to the HomeGoods in Avon to accent what you’ve found.
