One day last summer, my now fiancé, Gio, told me that I had one day to show him engagement rings I liked. We went to what felt like a million stores in one day. When we got to Kay Jewelers, Gio and I both immediately felt at ease. I found the perfect nontraditional engagement ring. When I saw this engagement ring, it just felt like me. Almost a year later, our wedding day is around the corner and it’s time to shop for our wedding rings! Picking out is a different process than finding an engagement ring. Gio had no idea what kind of wedding band he wanted. But we did know that we could find complementary his and hers wedding bands at Kay Jewelers!
Your wedding ring is a piece of jewelry that you’ll be wearing everyday forever so it’s not a decision to take lightly! It’s important to infuse your personal style and make sure that your wedding ring feels true to your personal style. It’s not necessary for spouses to have matching wedding bands. Gio and I decided that rather than going matchy-matchy, we would aim for rings that were complementary and fit our individual style.
My engagement ring is not your typical white band with a big ole diamond in the middle. It was actually extremely important to find a ring that didn’t look like that. I have nothing against traditional engagement rings, but it didn’t feel like me. I love that my yellow gold stacked engagement ring has a modern feel while also being somewhat minimalist.
Knowing I had a stacked engagement ring that takes up the entirety of my finger below my knuckle, I have to admit that I had some nerves about finding a wedding band to match. The team at Kay Jewelers had no doubts! They were full of helpful suggestions. They asked all the right questions while showing me a wide range of options.
After trying on a few existing wedding bands, we decided to a custom wedding band that will fit within my engagement ring. Kay Jewelers offers custom engagement and wedding bands. The process was much easier than expected. I picked out a design and Kay sent my engagement ring off to their team to make a mold. Within a few weeks, I had my ring back and a detailed mock-up of what my wedding band will look like come September.
Next up, Gio had to find his wedding band. He had no idea what he wanted. And while rings have no gender, Gio did know he wanted a traditionally masculine ring. The team at Kay Jewelers showed him all of the wedding bands for men. These options included everything minimalist matte black stainless steel band to the most blinged out of yellow gold diamond mens wedding bands. Yes, I did make Gio try on the gaudiest ring they had.
Since my my engagement ring is yellow gold, I suggested Gio find a ring that had yellow gold in it. He wanted black incorporated in some way. Kay had plenty of options that contained both some kind of yellow gold and elements of black diamonds.
Gio and I love each other and we love Kay Jewelers too! They have more than 1,200 stores across the country. And I love that as a plus size babe with larger fingers, they provide an in-store shopping experience with plenty of options that can be custom fit.
Buying a wedding band is a big moment and shopping at Kay isn’t a one-time experience. It’s an on-going relationship. You can stop in any store for a cleaning whenever you want (something I fully take advantage of). If you have any issues with your ring, they want you to come to them. As a company, they’re customer-focused always ready to tackle any challenge.
Around the Kay Jewelers store, there’s a diverse range of ads including my favorite LGBTQ-inclusive ad shown above. In our experience, Kay Jewelers is an inclusive employer. A transgender woman of color sold us my engagement ring. They marched in Cleveland Pride and they partnered with Gio and I, an LGBTQ couple. As the rights of the LGBTQ community remain under attack, steps for inclusion by such a well-known brand is major!
