I have been described as semi-outdoorsy but if you ask my family and friends, they may replace the “semi” with “not at all.” While I love adventure, I have a definite preference for my outdoor sleeping arrangements. Give me a cozy cabin over a breezy tent any day. I have long been curious about the tiny house trend. As a plus size person, I had no idea if I could even move around in a tiny house. In this , I am here to tell you that plus size travelers can experience the tiny house trend too!

What is Getaway House?
First of all, you may be asking, ‘what is Getaway House?’ Getaway House provides modern cabin rentals at city-adjacent locations all around the country. With locations near New York, Atlanta, Portland, Los Angeles, Dallas and more, it’s easy to escape from just about every corner of the US.
I live in Northeast Ohio so this Getaway House review is for the Pittsburgh/Cleveland location. Getaway House Pittsburgh/Cleveland is located in Lisbon, Ohio. The location is about an hour and a half from Cleveland and 45 minutes from Pittsburgh.
What To Expect
Every Getaway House cabin looks exactly the same – it’s a black minimalist tiny house. Getaway House’s defining feature is a large window overlooking the outdoor scenery.
So how tiny is this tiny house? Well, each Getaway House cabin is between 140-200 square feet. Both my husband and I are were able to move around comfortably for the weekend.
The Getaway House Beavercreek property is 59 acres but you are close to your neighbors. At night, you feel totally secluded in your wilderness getaway. During the day, you can see other cabins nearby. The windows on the side of your cabin are small and you can easily close the blinds for more privacy.
The outside of each Getaway House features outdoor picnic tables and chairs. There is also a fire pit and grilling grate. Firewood and lighters are available for purchase. Since it was pretty chilly during our visit, we didn’t make too much use of the outdoors beyond staring out our big window.
Inside Getaway House
To enter your Getaway House, walk up a set of black metal steps complete with side railings. Before you arrive, you will be texted the name of your cabin and a code to open the door. Each cabin is named after the grandparents of Getaway House staff. Once the door is open, you are in the bedroom, kitchen and dining room.
We stayed in a two-person cabin which meant that we had a queen bed. Getaway House also offers four-person cabins that include two queen beds lofted for that bunk bed feel. The bed is always situated in front of the big window. The bed comes with clean white linens, pillows and a throw blanket. We brought our own blankets too. There’s a step up to the bed.
The cabin has AC which is a win for someone who is always hot. We didn’t need the AC because we went to Getaway House during colder months. There’s heat that you can control in the cabin. It got pretty cozy.
The Kitchen
The kitchen is truly tiny but it’s just big enough that you can cook for two. There’s a sink with drinkable water, a stove and a mini-refrigerator. There’s no oven, toaster, microwave or coffee-maker. We knew what the kitchen equipped with and planned our meals accordingly.
We also thought about what we could cook that didn’t have bulky ingredients since we knew the fridge was small. There are some provisions that you can purchase at the cabin but since we had stopped at the grocery store on the way there, we didn’t need anything else.
My husband Gio is the primary cook in our house and he was definitely the best person to prepare our meals at Getaway House. While he cooked, I didn’t feel like I couldn’t move around the rest of the cabin. There was just enough room for me to walk behind him. It’s worth noting that we have an extremely small kitchen in our home so this was not much different.
You don’t need to bring any of your own cooking supplies. Getaway House comes equipped with a can opener, knives, a cutting board, mugs, plates, bowls, cups, silverware, pan, pot, mixing bowl and more.
For you wine drinkers, there is a corkscrew! In terms of seasoning, there’s salt, pepper, sugar, coffee creamer and olive oil provided. There are also grilling utensils if you decide to build a campfire and cook outside. Bring on the s’mores!
The Bathroom
When you’re facing the kitchen from the door, the bathroom is to your right. There’s a step up to the bathroom and a door you can look and close. The bathroom is small but I could comfortably fit on the toilet. The shower was spacious. I’ve stayed in smaller bathrooms at New York City hotels before.
The bathroom comes equipped with fresh towels so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own. The shower features organic and biodegradable shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The bathroom itself was colder than the rest of the cabin but the water was hot.
Is there WiFi at Getaway House?
Don’t plan on catching up on work at Getaway House. Get ready for some R&R. Getaway House is designed to be a disconnect from technology. Forget WiFi, you won’t even have cell phone service at Getaway House. There is a landline phone.
Getaway House encourages guests to put their cell phones in a lock box and truly unplug. My phone was essentially a camera and a flashlight the whole weekend if I used it at all.
We called our loved ones and gave them that number in case they needed to reach us. Although I’m sure this differs by cell phone carrier, we knew that if we needed it, we had cell phone service about five minutes before we pulled up to our cabin.
Bring Your Own Games!
We specifically planned our trip to Getaway House as a way to reconnect with each other after the wedding and honeymoon. One of our favorite is games so we brought plenty of board games. I think we played over 20 games of scrabble at the tiny table for two. A game that I wish we had brought was , a murder mystery game where you get to be the detective!
I sat at the chair but there’s also a bench you can sit at to use the table. This bench doubles as the step up to the bed as well. For the amount of time I sat in the chair, it was uncomfortable but it did not dig into my hips or butt area.
Inside the cabin, there’s a AM/FM radio and wireless speakers. I can’t remember the last time I listened to the radio that much. We had downloaded a few episodes on our iPads and we watched those while falling asleep.
Final Thoughts
Getaway House is a romantic wilderness escape. It’s also clean, new and minimalist – something you can’t always count on from individual cabin rentals.
Getaway House is a tiny house rental but I didn’t feel cramped. My husband and I enjoyed a cozy unplugged weekend. Although from a size perspective, I found Getaway House to be accessible, it’s important to note that there are steps required to get into the cabin itself and also into the bed. There are accessible cabins with ramps at most outposts and you can email lodge@getaway.house to inquire about booking one of those.
I hope this Getaway House review answered all of your questions but if not, feel free to leave me a comment and let me know what else you want to know!
