Cuffing season is upon us. Whether youâre still trying to find your person or youâre already loved up, dressing to impress when youâre plus size can be difficult. So many mainstream stores donât stock clothes, or what they do stock is drab and frumpy. But plus size people deserve to look and feel their best when theyâre dating – you just need to know where to look.
If you havenât found your personal style yet, donât panic! Thereâs always time to experiment and play around with which styles you feel comfortable in and bring out your best self. So much of the queer fashion we see in the media is focused on people who are smaller sizes, so it can be hard to imagine the apparel on someone plus-size, or find retailers that stock larger sizes. But everyone deserves to feel their best self.
Finding Your Style
Queer style is all about shirking gender norms and embracing what makes you unique. Finding what makes you feel confident and fabulous when plus size dating takes some experimentation.
Try new things! We donât often see plus size women who are butch or androgynous represented in media, but that doesnât mean it’s not for you. There are brands out there that cater to plus size babes and also offer more gender-neutral styles. Even if you identify as femme, try it out and see how it makes you feel.
When youâre trying out new looks, itâs normal to feel apprehensive at first. Ask yourself a few questions when youâre trying new styles. How do you feel in the clothes? How do they make you act? Do they match how you want to be seen? How do they change your perspective on your body?
Dress to Impress
When youâre dating, itâs nice to put in a little extra effort than usual. Dating requires putting yourself out there and investing in another person. Whether itâs the first date or the hundredth, showing someone youâre willing to put in the effort is important.
Even if you feel more comfortable dressing casually, go a little further than normal. Pop on some cute accessories, put some more time into your makeup or even just iron or steam your clothes so they look extra fresh. Often, doing these extra little things will give you a confidence boost as well.
Embrace Being Queer and Plus Size
We all know there is a lack of inclusion of LGBTQ+ and plus-size people in media and in fashion. While things are slowly changing, thereâs a long way to go yet. Be the change you want to see in the world. Support brands that offer plus size clothing that makes you feel confident in yourself and be your best self, whether itâs on a date or anywhere else. Experiment, be bold and have fun with it!
