You don’t need a big group of friends to have a game night and with our current state of social distancing, that’s just not possible anyways. There’s plenty of fun card and board that you only need two people to play.
Prior to Coronavirus, my husband and I played card and board games at home a few nights a week anyways. As a couple, we’ve spent more nights around the Scrabble board than at the club.
We spent the majority of our engaged in our own tournament of games. We keep tracking of every win and sometimes we put a little wager on it. We never bet money but sometimes we will wager something like loser has to do the dishes.
Forget games like Apples to Apples or its dirty cousin, Cards Against Humanity if you are looking for board games for couples. As much as I love , you need more than two people to play. Save those games for gatherings in the future and get ready to indulge in the best card and board games for couples!

Rack-O
, $13.59
Rack-O was first released in 1956 but this retro game has aged very well. Rack-O is one of my mom’s favorite games so I grew up playing it. I remember when I first introduced it to Gio, I kept winning just from my years of experience. My winning streak lasted about one night because Gio is a game master and quick learner.
Rack-O is fun to play with four people but easy to play with just two. This game is fast-paced. The goal is to swap out cards turn-by-turn so that they are in your rack from high to low. First to get them in order yells out Rack-O and wins the game!
SKIP-BO Card Game
, $13.67
Although I didn’t start playing SKIP-BO until I was an adult, this is the game that my best grew up playing with her family. She taught me how to play and now when I play with my husband, we utilize her rules. A card laid is a card played!
This is a card game of sequence. You build piles from 1-12 and the goal is to get rid of every card in your personal stockpile to win.
Rummikub
$14.99
I still have no idea how to play Gin Rummy but I know and love how to play Rummikub. It’s a game that requires skill and strategy. The goal is to remove every tile from your rack by making sequences. In order to do that, especially with only two players, you are required to think creatively!
Go Low Card Game
, $6.99
The objective of Go Low is to win a series of five hands with the lowest score. You lay out four cards in front of you. The games dictates that you can look at two of them but the other two remain a mystery. You swap out cards but only until you or your opponent says “Go low.”
Gio is definitely the game master between the two of us but if there’s one game I can consistently out-play him at, it’s Go Low. This card game is made for risk-takers, which I am. So if your partner is a control freak like mine but you are a free spirit, get ready to win!
Scrabble – Harry Potter Edition
, $27.25
Gio and I love to play traditional Scrabble but as Harry Potter fans, we have enjoyed adding the Harry Potter edition of the game to the mix. The rules are similar but there’s additional challenges that relate to the series as well as the ability to get extra points for using “magical” words. Don’t forget to grab a to avoid cheating!
Phase 10
, $13.99
I never played Rummy growing up but I did play a card game called Frustration. We played it off of one tired printed out piece of paper. The concept was that you had to complete a series of 10 tasks. The first to discard all of their cards after completing the task could leave another player stranded on that task. Phase 10 is essentially the same as Frustration but instead of playing cards, you use the cards in this game. It’s easy to play with or with a group!
Golden Girls Trivia Game
, $10.20
My husband and I have been arguing over who is a bigger Golden Girls fan since we started dating. The Any Way You Slice It game puts your Golden Girls trivia to the set to solve who has watched more GG reruns (or in our case, who has the better memory)!
Blink
, $5.39
Now if Go Low is a game for risk-takers, Blink is a game for folks with quick reflexes. This is not me but is very much my husband. If there’s a game that he can beat me at 9/10 games, it’s Blink. You have to get rid of your cards by being the first to pair each card by pairing them by shape or color. If you Blink, you could miss a discard opportunity so be quick!
Sequence
, $14.59
Sequence is part card game and part board game. There’s a big board with different card faces on it. The goal is to put down a card from your hand and mark it with a chip. You want to get five chips in a row on the board to create a sequence. The first player to make two sequences, wins! But watch out because Jacks allow your opponent to remove your chips!
Stranger Things Trivial Pursuit
, $17.30
I actually had no idea that you could play Trivial Pursuit with two people until Gio brought home the Back the 80s edition. Although we would probably both be better at a 90s edition as late 80s babies, we love the challenge who paid more attention to VH1’s “I Love the ’80s” back in the day.
This game challenges your knowledge of the 80s and also the Netflix show Stranger Things. The board flips from the Mall to the Upside Down where a wrong answer can cause you to lose a pie piece! This adds a bit of stress and high stakes to a fun game.
Uno
, $9.99
Uno is a classic card game and in fact, many of the card games on this list are sister games to Uno. It’s likely you’ve played Uno at some point in your life so I won’t break it down for you. You can decide with your partner if you can stack +2 cards. I’ll let y’all argue about that one!
Hunt A Killer
Hunt A Killer is not a board or card game technically but it’s definitely something entertaining for couples to play together. It’s an interactive monthly murder mystery box. Check out my full for more details and a coupon code!
So there you have it – the best card and board games for couples. Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive and represents our personal favorites. Have a favorite card or board game that we missed? Let me know in the comments so we can give it a try!
