Dope At Any Height: Plus Size Vintage with DivaXpress

Before Ramona and I met in person we were mutual admirers of each other's style online. I always loved how Ramona effortlessly incorporated bold vintage pieces into her looks and still made them look modern and fresh. Ramona makes it look easy but it can be a challenge to find good plus size vintage especially when you're petite or tall.

Dope At Any Height is a project between Ramona and I designed to tackle the challenges of shopping when you're petite plus size or tall and plus size vintage is one way that we both like to add a edgy touch to our style. Cheetah print is forever my favorite so these pieces from plus size vintage shop DivaXpress were perfect for this look.

32 Places to Shop for Plus Size Swimwear

It's that time of year when we start to get bombarded with ads about getting "beach body ready." Well guess what? Your body is ready for the beach just as it is. All you need is the perfect plus size swimwear that feels right for you! There's a variety of retailers making plus size swimwear in a range of styles. Whether your aesthetic is total beach goth or sultry poolside goddess, chances are you can find what you're looking for!

Because I get asked about plus size swimwear so often, I wanted to put together an online shopping guide. The below list is in alphabetical order and while it's certainly not completely exhaustive, there's definitely a range of sizes, budgets and styles represented in this list. To the best of my knowledge, I've included sizing and pricing information and any other key details that may factor into your decision of where to shop. The pictures represent only a sampling of each retailer's offerings so make sure you click the links to check each site out!

Plus Size Dress: What I Wore on Christmas Eve

By Alysse Dalessandro
on December 30, 2016

Plus Size Dress
I took these pictures before Christmas Eve so that I would be prepared to show you my outfit before the day came. Well, here we are five days after Christmas and I am just getting around to sharing this look with you. I could beat myself up or I could say hey at least you did it! I am choosing the latter. As we go into 2017, I want to continue to work on leaving negative self talk behind for good.

I am not a perfectionist but I do constantly push myself and no matter how hard I work, it never seems like enough. I am going to work on being kinder to myself and spend the time I would usually spend on beating myself up for not doing enough on self care instead. If you're thinking, 'hey this was supposed to be a post about a dress?' I promise that I am getting to that!

Plus Size Holiday Clothes: Dripping in Sequins

By Alysse Dalessandro

Plus Size Holiday Clothes

I believe it is perfectly acceptable to wear sequins and items that are otherwise considered plus size holiday clothes whenever you damn feel like it, but it just so happens that if you're in the market for sequins, the holidays are the best time to stock up. Whether you're looking for a plus size sequin bodycon to dazzle on New Year's Eve or the perfect sequin encrusted romper to wear to the grocery store, sequins are trending for plus size fashion in a big way.

There are so many ways to wear sequins beyond just a dress or skirt that you don't have to feel limited to wear this bold style in one certain way. I put together a list of my favorite ways to wear sequins for all of you to shop below! In addition to letting you know where to find the item, I also noted which brands carry extended sizing (4X+) and which brands are black-owned businesses.

Black Owned Business: HGC Apparel Co.

Black Owned Business: HGC Apparel Co.
For my birthday trip to San Diego, I brought along a few casual looks from Black-Owned Business: HGC Apparel Co. As I mentioned in my #BloggersForBlackLives post earlier this year, I am going to work on making a more conscious effort to rock more apparel from Black Owned Businesses and when it comes to making a fashion statement and social change at the same time, HGC Apparel Co. is one of the best!
I love HGC Apparel tees and sweatshirts not only because of the designs but also because of the quality and fit. I wear the HGC Apparel Co. "Support Black Owned Business" tee all the time and it is soooo soft. The brand is plus-size friendly with most women's tees available to 2XL and unisex tees and sweatshirts up to the same size.

20 Businesses To Support This Small Business Saturday

By Alysse Dalessandro
on November 26, 2016

For the past two years, I have been celebrating Small Business Saturday with a list of small businesses to support. Over the years, it has brought me much joy to be able to shine this light on hardworking individuals who wear many hats and in some cases, ALL the hats, in their small business.

When you shop from small businesses, you know exactly where you're money is going: into the pockets of an individual creator. As always, I found the businesses on this list by posting a call for submissions on my social media and as long as the business was small (10 employees or under), it's included here! And I am happy that I not only got to connect with the Ready to Stare community on this but that I, too, got to learn about some new small businesses along the way!  I hope that there's a little something for everyone on your list.

#BloggersForBlackLives: Actions Speak Louder Than Shirts

#BloggersForBlackLives
I am honored to be able to participate alongside my fellow plus size bloggers in #BloggersForBlackLives. Today, more than ever, I feel like we need the reminder. Founded by Seyi of In Fashion We Trust, #BloggersForBlackLives was created to stand in solidarity with the black men and women gunned down by police officers. And as Seyi writes, "just because you’re not the one being bullied at school, does not mean you can not stand up to the bully."
I remember the first time that I personally became aware of the systematic racism rampant in the police force. I was living in Chicago and my boyfriend at the time called to tell me that he had just been jumped outside a bar in the newly gentrified neighborhood where he lived. I remember the way his voice shook when he told me what happened.

Plus Size Tees: To The Polls

By Alysse Dalessandro
on November 07, 2016

plus size tees

This past weekend, I headed to my local board of elections to vote early. Armed with a fire in my belly to stand up to one of the hateful candidates in recent memory, I was ready to cast my vote and do my small part to stand up to the trauma that has been this election season. I wore my "Fuck Donald" Freedom of Speech plus size tee underneath my buttoned jacket. And if the rules allowed it, I would have gladly marched in there with my jacket wide open. My message this election season is clear: Fuck Donald. You can use the code "PLEASEVOTE" to take 30% off this tee and all DBM merch for the next 24 hours.

As a survivor of sexual assault, the mere mention of the name Donald Trump makes me feel ill. I haven't clicked on any articles related to Trump in months because it's honestly just too hard for me to see how Trump and his supporters justify sexual assault as "boys being boys." Trump is racist, xenophobic, and sexist as fuck. And what he's done is give like-minded bigots a chance to expose themselves and it's terrifying.
