Queer Fashion Review: Boxers for All Genders and All Sizes
When it comes to underwear, I am usually pretty picky. This is something my boyfriend, Gio, and I have in common. I would say underwear is one of our shared LGBT and queer fashion woes! I am plus size and he is transgender so we both understand that it can be challenging to find boxers that fit just right for all genders and all sizes. Often times, I found that boxers don't account for the hip to waist ratio of a curvier body and Gio says the fabric and fit are crucial for him.

With this challenge in mind, you can imagine how excited I was to find Glitter Grandpa, a queer-owned brand that offers custom-made boxers that could be made to fit any size. Steer Queer and queer sewist Glitter Grandpa combined their efforts to make this much-needed custom-fit option. They worked with a number of LGBTQ models in the Pittsburgh area to ensure that the fit worked across a range of body types and gender expressions.

Boxers are available in a variety of stretch lycra fabrics in fun patterns and the custom order form ensures that every fit detail is attended to. We picked the medium weight galaxy print material which can be also be used for swim. The succulent pattern is the same but the black material is a light-weight jersey.

We both found these to fit similar to swimsuit bottoms - a little thicker than traditional underwear but sturdy, breathable and still very comfortable. For me, I really appreciate the high amount of stretch as I have encountered some boxers that fit in the waist but then were too tight in the thighs. Glitter Grandpa gives you the option to select anti-roll leg bands and this was clutch for me in terms of fit. Since my thighs are rounded, I often have issues with boxers rolling and these totally stayed in place thanks to this custom option.

Glitter Grandpa's order form asked for hip, waist and thigh measurements. We were able to customize the rise. I picked high rise (duh) and Gio picked low. These hit exactly where I wanted them to above my belly button. You could customize the fly style to be open or closed. Glitter Grandpa also allows you to customize the fit to have wiggle room in the crotch or no wiggle room. Gio and I both found this custom option to be very helpful as boxers are typically make this decision for you based on assumptions about a customer's gender.

Glitter Grandpa allows you to customize your waistband. I selected the glitter elastic waistband which is two inches wide. Gio picked the one inch wide fabric waistband. I had zero issues with my boxers falling down but Gio said he would've preferred an option with an elastic waistband that wasn't glitter for some extra support. The final customization is length. I picked long and Gio picked short.

The Glitter Grandpa ordering process is not simple and I think that's a great thing. The questionnaire asks thoughtful questions but makes no assumptions. That's a queer fashion win! Our bodies are all different and a 2X in one brand won't fit the same as a 2X in another brand. Underwear don't just different by gender idenity but also by individual. Glitter Grandpa takes the guessing out of ordering boxers and makes boxers that fit just for you.
