Over this past weekend, my best friend Kristen surprised me with a trip to San Diego to celebrate my 29th birthday. I love any chance to get in some plus size travel especially when that involves trading snow boots and ear muffs for sandals and sundresses! I was lucky enough to get some amazing looks from plus size clothing brand ELOQUII that served as the perfect accent to the already amazing vibe in San Diego. You can take 40% off select styles now from ELOQUII with the code: HOLIDAY.
From their new petite plus and Viola lines that cater to different body types to their size 26/28 lookbooks, ELOQUII is a brand that consistently gets what plus size woman are looking for from clothing. I love the brand's versatility to provide both tailored, well made plus size basics and over-the-top sequin plus size dresses. Both were exactly what I needed to ring in my 29th year.
For the day of my actual birthday, I had to wear sequins because I am a Sagittarius after all. ELOQUII has SO many plus size sequin dresses that it was a challenge to pick one but ultimately, the Sequin Stripe Dress with Collar made the biggest statement to me. I paired it with a metal "Birthday Girl" headband from Wet Seal.
I am size 20 and based on my past experience with ELOQUII, I decided to size down to an 18. This shift-style dress has a zipper in the back but no stretch. I could've afforded to get a 20 just for a little breathing room so I would suggest ordering your true size, rather than sizing down like I did. It's available up to a size 28! It's fully-lined and the sequins cover the front AND the back of the dress. WIN!
Now let's talk about my birthday! On the day of my actual birthday, we started the day in San Diego by having brunch outside at Breakfast Republic. It was hands down one of the best brunches of my life. Kristen got the pancake flight which was a good way to try a few different options. After lunch, we did some shopping at Chula Vista Center followed by horseback riding which I will be discussing it another post later this week!
Kristen remembered that I had been to a Brazilian steakhouse exactly once and never shut up about how good it was so she had made us dinner reservations at Fogo de Chão. During the entire meal, which was as expected indulgent and delicious, people kept coming up to me to compliment my dress. I felt like a princess and goddammit, I am. I ended my birthday by chilling in the hot tub rather than turning up at the club and for almost 30, that felt just right for me.
On Saturday, Kristen and I had brunch in La Jolla at a less than memorable spot I wouldn't recommend but we did end up doing a lot of enjoyable exploring after that! I had a casual daytime look that I'll be sharing later this week and I changed into this ELOQUII wrap crop top in crushed berry and tassel midi skirt in the late afternoon for dinner and a comedy show.
I got the size 18 in both the crop top and midi skirt and both were a perfect fit for me in that size. I loved the weight of the crop top and how the ties were long enough to tie in the front or the back.
When I saw the skirt online, I thought the tassels were embroidered but when I got the skirt, I saw that they were actual tassels hanging off the skirt and I loved it even more. The skirt itself had a ton of volume and give me modern pinup vibes.
During the day on Saturday, we walked around Waterfront Park before we discovered that taking on San Diego's 59-mile scenic drive would allow us to see a lot of different sights all at once! We snapped these pictures at one of the stops along the way, Spanish Landing Park.
We also checked out Point Loma before catching the sunset at Cabrillo National Monument which had an unbelievable view of the city. Pictures don't do it justice BUT I highly recommend visiting this spot just for the views.
We finished our day with dinner in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter .before taking in a comedy show at Mad House Comedy Club. Once again, my ELOQUII threads were the topic of conversation and everyone wanted to know where I got my tassel skirt.
I am all about conquering my fears in 2016 and one of my big fears was wearing all white. It has nothing to do with thinking white looks bad on me or the tired no white after Labor Day rule and everything to do with the fact that I am kind of a messy eater. I decided to risk it all for this ELOQUII plus size off the shoulder ruffle dress. We went to drag brunch at Gossip Grill in Hillcrest where we had an absolute blast.
The fit of this dress was perfection. I have worn a lot of off-the-shoulder styles this year but the cut and the bow added so much extra visual interest. This dress is fully lined and has a zipper in the back but no stretch so I suggest ordering true to size.
On Saturday, Kristen and I had made a reservation to go snorkeling. We showed up to this beach in La Jolla to meet our guide only to find out that they didn't offer wet suits in our size. It was in the mid-60s out but the water was cold as ice and snorkeling without a wetsuit just wasn't an option.
The experience was a total bummer and since I know wetsuits exist in our size, it was disappointing that this company didn't offer them especially since we had called with our sizing information before booking. In any case, we went back to this beach on Sunday to rewrite this memory.
We returned specifically to this beach located at a small entrance way near the Marine Room because of the amazing views both of the beach and of this one particularly epic beach house. Upon doing a little research, I found it was nicknamed the Sand Castle house. Although we still didn't do any swimming, we took in the views under much more positive energy this time around.
Thanks again to a recommendation along San Diego's 59-mile scenic drive, we headed to Children's Pool where we took in even better ocean views and got to see harbor seals snoozing on the rocks! I've never seen seals in real life and not in an aquarium so this was totally cool to me.
My long weekend in San Diego was an absolutely amazing way to spend my birthday. Being a December baby, I've always done ice skating outings and other winter-based activities to celebrate but traveling to a warmer place definitely suited me better. I remember a particular birthday in Chicago where I ruined a new pair of heels by attempting to wear them in the snow. This was a much more enjoyable way to spend my birthday.
ELOQUII provided the perfect wardrobe to make sure my looks throughout the entire weekend were on point.
