In honor of Valentine's Day, I wanted to treat myself to a plus size boudoir shoot! I have posed in lingerie many times over the past two years but I have been conscious to remove any bedroom element from those photos. For Valentine's Day, I wanted to not only pamper myself with a boudoir shoot but also challenge myself to try something new.
Lucky for me, I am good friends with an amazing Cleveland-based body positive boudoir photograher, Amber Patrick. We shot these images on the day of the Inauguration - definitely a day when I needed some self care and pampering! After giving a few sneak peaks of this shoot on social media, I got a lot of questions about plus size boudoir and how to be more comfortable posing online in lingerie. I have a few things that in the past have made me more comfortable and a few things I learned by doing this boudoir shoot.
First off, you have to find a photographer that you are comfortable with! My best friend Kristen has taken the majority of my lingerie photos for my blog and when I was thinking about doing my first boudoir shoot, knowing that I would be shooting it with Amber put me at ease. If you don't know a photographer personally, you can totally request a meeting first to make sure you're comfortable. And don't forget to look through their portfolio. Knowing Amber regularly shoots plus size bodies always puts me at ease.
Secondly, pick plus size lingerie that is in your comfort zone. I'm all for challenging beauty standards through fashion but posing in lingerie can be vulnerable enough. If you want to push it, do it! But don't feel like you have to.
In my everyday personal style, I'm far more comfortable being bold and in-your-face than looking basic but doing this boudoir shoot forced me to tap into a softer side of myself that I don't usually show. I take pictures on a weekly basis and this soft element caught even me off-guard. Be prepared that this shoot will involve some vulnerability and embrace that moment.
And lastly, do plus size boudoir FOR YOU! You don't need to be in a relationship to do boudoir or wear lingerie for that matter. I am single with no potential boo in sight. Taking lingerie images and now doing plus size boudoir isn't about attention or validation from anyone else. In fact, there's really nothing sexual to me about lingerie anymore. I like taking these images because I think it's important to show how visibly plus size bodies LOOK in lingerie because we still see it so infrequently from retailers and brands.
These are the reasons I focus on lingerie on my blog and why I decided to do plus size boudoir but your reasons are your reasons! And whether or not you decide to keep these photos just for you, share them with an intimate partner or blast them all over the internet, do it for you!
