I am SO excited to introduce you all today to a new brand, T.S. Fux, that’s ethically making custom plus size basics right in LA! The brand’s message is a simple one: 100% USA-made clothing for an ethically uncomplicated life in an inclusive size range.
T.S. Fux will be launching their products online in April 2017 with a size inclusive photo shoot and I am proud to say that I am one of the first bloggers to get to review these products! In addition to trying out these items for myself, I got to chat with the brand’s founder, Goretti Welborn, about why she decided to start the brand and the impact she hopes to make in the fashion industry. I loved the dedication to minimalism and ethically-made goods as soon as I learned about the brand and interviewing Goretti made me love T.S. Fux even more!
Goretti has worked in fashion for more than 25 years and she started sewing at the age of five. In 2013, she became a plus size clothing expert for Modcloth.
“I was the face and cheerleader for all, and pushed for more transparency when it came to explaining why brands don’t include plus sizes,” says Goretti . “Not making plus size apparel isn’t always because brands don’t want to include the larger sizes, it’s because they don’t always know how to fit the anatomy. Since I am a fitting expert and have been fitting all sizes for 25 years, it was an easy choice for me to include all sizes in our brand size range.”
The name T.S. Fux, though seemingly simple, has a deep meaning tied to the brand’s ethos. It’s a combination of latin words and an acronym. The T stands for Tōtus meaning all-encompassing and the S stands for Sollum meaning dependability. And the acronym for Fux takes into account the shape of the letters itself. In Goretti’s words: “F: stands up straight, exemplifying accountability and honesty. U: stands for compassion, its open center acting as a metaphorical open heart. X: is symmetrical and represents balance & stability.”
There’s both a simplicity and a thoughtfulness behind every part of T.S. Fux. From the name to the fabrication of the products. Fabrics are knitted in Los Angeles which is also where Goretti and the T.S. Fux team is handcrafting these pieces. Paying livable wages to everyone involved in the process along with finding the best possible materials is paramount to Goretti.
“I focus on French terry and knit fabrications for this brand core base,” says Goretti. “The pieces are made from this weave of fabric to allow for comfort and ease in dressing. The simple, uncomplicated, and handmade ethos that I follow each day to create pieces ensure excellent fit for all shapes and sizes. I don’t cut corners when sourcing fabrics for T.S. Fux or looking for the fabrications; I prioritize the quality of the fabrics, first and foremost.”
The designs in the shop are all uncomplicated: a basic tee, a tunic, a dolman top, and a dress. The color options are simple too: black, heather grey, a light grey, and black/grey boucle. All of the designs feature raw edges which was another thoughtful design element.
“The raw edges are a necessary detail in each piece and part of the foundation of our brand,” says Goretti. “We are planning to employ those that needs jobs and need job training. In part of doing so, we are starting with basic deconstructed styles that are trending in fashion right now. The raw edges align with our brand aesthetic perfectly as simple, uncomplicated, and hand made. The fabrications are tightly woven and we’ve done stress tests to ensure this feature will hold up in washes for many uses.”
I am wearing the Dress in black and the Original in natural. When I ordered them, I looked at the size chart and then I worked directly with the T.S. Fux team to customize these styles for my height. Since I am shorter, I wanted the dress to actually hit above my knees since it’s hard for me to find short styles. I was finally able to find the perfect dress to pair with these thigh high wide calf boots! SCORE. Plus, the customization process was easy! The size chart covers XS-4X but since everything is handmade to order, you can custom order what works for your body.
“Customers are encouraged to review their measurements in comparison with our size chart,” says Goretti. The lengths of each piece are provided in product details and are adjusted based on styling. If they are unable to fit into one of our standardized patterns, a special request can be made for adjustment to bust, waist, hips or length. It’s very important to us that our customers are happy!”
I was definitely happy with my T.S. Fux pieces and my best friend (who has a totally different style than me) has already been begging me to let her borrow them. It’s hard to go wrong with pieces like these that are perfectly uncomplicated and easy to wear. The fact that they can be made custom is a total bonus. And by shopping with T.S. Fux, you are supporting a brand with a mission. Goretti tells me:
“As this company grows my goal as its visionary and leader is to take people and train them to have a job in a work environment that builds up their self-confidence. It is critical to me on a personal level to teach those that work for me my special mixture of skills as a foundation for a successful career. I’ve been very fortunate to learn from great mentors and believe in paying it forward to all of those that I take under my wing. T.S. Fux is my opportunity to start from ground zero and with a brand that is solely made in USA create jobs that need them.”
