I swear I wasn't going to make a year in review type of post this year but what can I say I am a girl who loves self reflection and even though 2016 sucked in so many ways, I had some really great plus size personal style moments this year. I continued to break the rules, follow my own fashion bliss and hopefully inspired some of y'all to do the same!
When I first started plus size blogging, taking images became a self love challenge. Blogging was a way for me to see myself in a whole new light. And along the way, the things that used to terrify me became second nature. I decided that my flaws were part of my power and my beauty. Eventually, I learned to see my body not as a problem I needed to solve but as a beautiful vessel that was all mine.
The fact that I have learned to love my body doesn't mean others have and learning to tune out the voices of others about my body has been a whole separate challenge. The more I learn to continue to dress for me and wear what I like, the happier I become. Here are a few of the plus size style mantras that I practiced this year!
1. You Can Wear Crop Tops Year-Round
All you need to do is call on a crop top whenever you damn please!
2. You Can Never Have Too Many Ruffle Dresses
Because ruffles are the cutest, duh.
3. Hoop Earrings Go With Everything
I've always loved hoops and this was the year that I basically stopped wearing any other type of earrings.
4. You Can Be An Actual Mermaid
Photographer Amber Patrick turned Noella Deville and I into badass mermaid babes this summer at Huntington Beach in Cleveland. I've never felt so powerful!
5. Height Doesn't Limit Your Style
Blogger babe Ramona O. partnered up this year to create #DOPEatAnyHeight and we showed that your height never has to limit what you wear.
6. When In Doubt, Wear Polka Dots
This list could really go on and on. Polka dots forever!
In 2016, I wore shorts more than ever before and they solidified a place in my wardrobe and more importantly, in my heart.
8. Sequins Can Be Casual
Thanks to Society+ and photographer Amber Patrick I was able to capture my love of sequins and denim this year. I proved that sequins aren't just for New Year's Eve.
9. Lingerie is For Every Body (including mine!)
There's something about wearing styles traditionally seen as gaudy or tacky that makes me feel like ME. Showing my bra is one of my favorite ways to express this side of my style.
11. When You Want To Make A Statement, Say It On A Tee
Plus size tees continued to be my favorite way to say exactly what was on my mind which most of the time involved giving a big fuck you to anyone who tried to police my body.
12. When You Have Plus Size Thigh Highs, Who Needs Pants?
I am forever on the hunt for plus size thigh high boots and socks. This year, I saw more options become available for plus and you know I took advantage of it!
13. Plus Size Jeans Are NOT The Enemy
As much as I continued to love wearing shorts and long shirts with no pants, I would say that 2016 was the year that I faced my fear of jeans. I left my childhood dressing room trauma in the past for good and embraced plus size jeans!
14. Jumpsuits Are Always A Good Idea
Even though I am petite plus, I have loved making jumpsuits part of my personal style! Whether in a bold print or a basic black, this is a go-to look for me!
15. Plus Size Fashion Is Better With Friends
My plus size fashion journey took me all over the country this year! From the TCF Style Expo in Atlanta to Good Morning America in New York, I more than exceeded one of my 2016 goals of traveling at least once every other month. And whether I was making new friends at events, meeting online friends IRL or at home with my day ones, this year was a big year of collaboration for me!
16. WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT
It actually took me looking back through everything I wore, wrote and did over this past year to own how much I challenged and pushed myself this year!
I am walking into 2017 with my middle finger in the air to fashion rules, my heels high and if you stare, you can beat, I am staring back!
