I've lived in the Midwest nearly my entire life save for the year that I moved to Atlanta because I was sick of dressing for the cold. I defiantly donated my winter coat and snow boots right before leaving Chicago only to find that it actually still gets pretty cold in Atlanta. And of course, I lived there the year that it snowed twice even though it hadn't snowed for years before that.

Winter coats have always been that one wardrobe staple that had to be somewhat utilitarian because I learned quickly that Midwest winters when you take public transportation were no fucking joke. My first year living in Chicago, I got caught in a snowstorm wearing 5-inch heels and a light sweater. I clearly remember shuffling my way back to my dorm and clinging onto what few trees and street signs I could while being blinded by snow. Fashion is awesome but survival is cool too.

Over the years, I've learned that a good winter coat might have to be something I splurge on if I want it to truly keep me warm. But I've also learned that I don't have to sacrifice my personal style to get something that's cute and functional.

My winter coat for this year is one I actually found already in my closet. It's by Calvin Klein who apparently does plus size. I couldn't find this exact style again on sale this year but I found a few similar ones that at I put at the top of this list along with a whole bunch of others that I wouldn't mind rotating in alongside this one. When you live in a place where winter can last for six months, it pays to have options.
