As a fashion designer, I get asked all the time when I'm going to move to New York or LA so I can really "make it" as a designer. Since I am already running a functional business but can't imagine condensing all of the stuff I've accumulated into a closet-size studio space, I kind of just laugh and nod at the idea of moving my business for the fourth time. And while there's plenty of amazing plus size designers on the coasts, there's another city on my radar anyways: Portland.
Although I haven't made it to Portland myself, it's a fat fashion destination spot and Copper Union is one more brand that's making my desire to visit even higher. Copper Union is an up-and-coming plus size label designed by Claire Doody. She emerged onto the plus size fashion scene with the F/W '14 collection, “Moscow Nomad" which earned her an audience favorite award.
Copper Union doesn't just make badass plus size apparel either; they support female bosses every month with a #FeminineWarrior feature on their blog. I spy another one of my favorite designers Shawna Farmer of Chubby Cartwheels as this month's featured warrior.
I got a chance to try out one of Copper Union's signature shrugs and I was excited to style it two ways: turned up and turned down, well at least by #StareStyle standards. I, of course, prefer the turned up version but I think both ways are super cute.
The shrug I'm wearing is bright lime green and it's made of a delicate lace fabric. I've never seen anything like that and to say that about something that's made in specifically for plus, is always a good thing. Though this exact style isn't available in their online shop, there's something really great winter styles that I am also lusting for! Matte black sequins anyone?
