Trendy Plus Size Workwear
I split my time as a designer, blogger, writer and creative marketer which means I need a wardrobe that works for whatever hat I may be wearing that day. Because my personal style leans a little more jazzy than the average late 20-something, I want trendy plus size workwear that allows me to keep it professional and express my bold aesthetic at the same time. This is where plus size clothing rental subscription service Gwynnie Bee totally has me covered!
Through my Gwynnie Bee subscription, I got to try out this Jete Abstract Cut Out Dress. I am wearing a size 1X but it's available up to a 5X. WIN! I love that this dress is business on the bottom and party on the top. The length and fit of the dress are definitely workwear appropriate while the pattern and cut-outs on the top make for a bold visual statement.

Extended Sizing: My 90s Inspired Look with On The Plus Side

extended sizing

Growing up as a chubby kid, there wasn’t a lot of characters in movies or television who looked like me. I found myself taking fashion inspiration in my own life from straight size characters. As a kid and into young adulthood, I didn’t understand that people would have a problem with me wearing styles I saw on these characters just because I was a different size.

Now that I am an adult, I deal with body policing and people telling me what I can and cannot wear on a regular basis. And when I’m dealing with a stranger’s opinion on what I should wear, I often draw on the confidence I built in my personal style as a kid. I remind myself that these rules aren’t real and that other’s opinions on what I can wear don’t matter. I don’t know if this why my personal style still takes so much inspiration from the 90s but it could have something to do with it.

20 Businesses To Support This Small Business Saturday

By Alysse Dalessandro
on November 26, 2016

For the past two years, I have been celebrating Small Business Saturday with a list of small businesses to support. Over the years, it has brought me much joy to be able to shine this light on hardworking individuals who wear many hats and in some cases, ALL the hats, in their small business.

When you shop from small businesses, you know exactly where you're money is going: into the pockets of an individual creator. As always, I found the businesses on this list by posting a call for submissions on my social media and as long as the business was small (10 employees or under), it's included here! And I am happy that I not only got to connect with the Ready to Stare community on this but that I, too, got to learn about some new small businesses along the way!  I hope that there's a little something for everyone on your list.

Plus Size Thigh High Wide Calf Boots

Wide Calf Thigh High Boots

Every year without fail, I get asked about one particular item in my wardrobe: my wide calf thigh high boots. I found them four years ago on a total whim when I was out shopping with my mom who ironically encouraged me to try them on. I wore them initially to a New Year's Eve party and I certainly wouldn't recommend breaking in a heel like this for the first time on a night like that. Let's just say, I spent a good chunk of my night scoping out available places to sit.

I've worn these wide calf thigh high boots on my blog every year and one of the images of me in these boots is now one of the top search results for the word "feminist." I am not mad about that at all (even though that same image has been used for countless hateful memes).

24 Wide Calf Boots For All Of Your Fall/Winter Needs

By Alysse Dalessandro
on November 11, 2016

wide calf boots

If you're like me, winter brings more than cooler temps; it also brings the struggle to find a pair of boots that you can zip past your ankles. I've shed more than a few tears of the years trying to find wide calf boots that actually fit. But retailers are getting hip to our needs as wide calf babes and this season, there are so many good wide calf boot options that I wanted to share my favorite picks with you.

When you're shopping online for wide calf boots, you need to know your calf measurement. The best way to do it is to get a sewing tape measure and measure your calf at its widest part. For reference, my calf is 19" which sizes me out of a few options. In addition to checking the calf circumference prior to buying, also make sure to look at the store's return policy. I recently was gifted a pair of awesome thigh high boots that I couldn't get past my ankles and I had to pay to send them back. Because of their size and weight, shipping boots can be costly so it's always a good idea to check the return policy.

#BloggersForBlackLives: Actions Speak Louder Than Shirts

#BloggersForBlackLives
I am honored to be able to participate alongside my fellow plus size bloggers in #BloggersForBlackLives. Today, more than ever, I feel like we need the reminder. Founded by Seyi of In Fashion We Trust, #BloggersForBlackLives was created to stand in solidarity with the black men and women gunned down by police officers. And as Seyi writes, "just because you’re not the one being bullied at school, does not mean you can not stand up to the bully."
I remember the first time that I personally became aware of the systematic racism rampant in the police force. I was living in Chicago and my boyfriend at the time called to tell me that he had just been jumped outside a bar in the newly gentrified neighborhood where he lived. I remember the way his voice shook when he told me what happened.

Plus Size Tees: To The Polls

By Alysse Dalessandro
on November 07, 2016

plus size tees

This past weekend, I headed to my local board of elections to vote early. Armed with a fire in my belly to stand up to one of the hateful candidates in recent memory, I was ready to cast my vote and do my small part to stand up to the trauma that has been this election season. I wore my "Fuck Donald" Freedom of Speech plus size tee underneath my buttoned jacket. And if the rules allowed it, I would have gladly marched in there with my jacket wide open. My message this election season is clear: Fuck Donald. You can use the code "PLEASEVOTE" to take 30% off this tee and all DBM merch for the next 24 hours.

As a survivor of sexual assault, the mere mention of the name Donald Trump makes me feel ill. I haven't clicked on any articles related to Trump in months because it's honestly just too hard for me to see how Trump and his supporters justify sexual assault as "boys being boys." Trump is racist, xenophobic, and sexist as fuck. And what he's done is give like-minded bigots a chance to expose themselves and it's terrifying.
